There’s nothing more nerve-racking than running late for a flight, getting stuck in security lines, and wondering if you will make your flight on time. Veteran travelers know that there are certain things that they can do to make getting through the airport security easier and quicker. Here are some tips to help you the next time you travel.

Take time to have all of the documents and paperwork that you need ready. When it is your turn to finally get your documents checked, you do not want to be looking through all of your pockets or digging at the bottom of your purse. Have your ID, boarding pass, and anything else that is needed in your hand when you enter the security line.

Do your own security scan. You may end up getting in a line that takes forever just because it is the short line. Take a look at the individuals who are waiting in the line and make a determination about who will more quickly get through. It is more likely that a bunch of business people are going to through a security line more quickly than multiple families with young children. A good rule of thumb is to head for the far right or the far left scanner lanes.

Find out about expedited services that are offered through some airlines. While a lot of thought goes into airport systems planning and design and helping passengers get through security as quickly as possible, most people who travel know that getting through an airport and security lines usually takes longer than they plan. Some airlines offer an expedited security line that can make travel a breeze.

Learn to pack and unpack like a professional. Take into consideration rules about which types of items can go into carry-on bags. Remember that liquids and gels need to be three ounces or smaller and have to all go into a clear bag. Put labels on the bottles. As soon as you need to unpack to get through the security line, all you need to do is whip out the one plastic bag and you will be through the scanner quickly.
